David B. Matthews
Vermont’s Anchor
In The NewEnglandNorth Group
Dave Matthews is a lifetime New
Englander, with a trail started in Massachusetts, then to
Connecticut, then to Vermont (BA,Univ. of Vermont), back to
Massachusetts for 21 years, and finally back to Vermont to
stay in 1990, where he leveraged his impressive resume of
marketing, public relations and entrepreneurial experience
into bringing business sellers and buyers together with
win-win solutions for privately held firms.
After a
successful period with a regional brokerage firm, he founded
NewEnglandNorth in 1994 to focus on larger
transactions, with revenues $1-25 million being the general
guideline.
Matthews has a competitive sports
background and believes strongly that teamwork is the critical
element in navigating parties to a successful transaction. An
intermediary is the key player to position a seller’s business
in the best possible light to the largest possible market, or
to come up with creative strategies on how a buyer may
successfully close out a business search. However, nothing can
happen without critical contributions from legal, accounting
and financing team players working for both sellers and
buyers.
Since 2000, Matthews has served as a
participating intermediary in privately held business
transitions in northern New England with a cumulative sales
value of over $20 million. His office is now also
administering The NewEnglandNorth Group marketing effort.
Matthews’ early career experiences in journalism in
Vermont, athletic public relations, marketing and event
management at Harvard University, executive director of New
England Tennis Assn., led him to establish his own sports
marketing firm in 1981.
He conducted marketing and
public relations seminars for a national sports organization,
managed a Boston sellout world movie premiere with live
appearances by Bill Cosby and Ali MacGraw, and was co-promoter
of a USA/Germany Davis Cup event, featuring John McEnroe and
Boris Becker, that was cited in as one of the Top 10 Sporting
Events Of The Century in Connecticut. He also created and
promoted New England’s first sports marketing seminar, held at
Boston Garden.
His success as an intermediary was seen
in this business niche, as he successfully helped major sports
events find corporate sponsorship, as well as consulting with
Fortune 500 clients on their searches for the right marketing
opportunities.
Matthews and his wife, Ruth, are parents of two grown
daughters. They reside in Stowe, Vermont.
